Changing thoughts

If you are making big changes to your gambling, you may feel some sadness at the money you have lost in the past. Sometimes the thought is that only a gambling win will solve these debt problems. Those thoughts can lead to risky behaviour. Chasing losses usually leads only to more losses. If it is too painful in accepting the money you have spent gambling in the past is gone forever, it may be good to seek professional support.

Changing “it’s too hard” thoughts to “I can do this” It is common for people to think they won’t be able to tolerate the change. That it is too hard. Too unfamiliar. Too boring. Too scary. Or just too much, period. It is normal to have these thoughts. Try replacing these with reassuring thoughts.

Use the following activity to write more examples here, so when these thoughts arise, you can talk yourself through it. Print off and stick it up somewhere you will see it or save it to your phone.

MYTH

After a few losses I’m due for a win.

FACT

A player is never due for a win (or a loss). In most cases the past results tell us nothing about what will occur next.

MYTH

I can predict the outcome of a bet.

FACT

While sometimes you may win, there is no reliable method anyone can use to win more than they lose.

MYTH

Wearing ‘lucky’ clothes, having ‘lucky’ charms or a betting system helps me to win.

FACT

Betting systems, charms and superstitions may help you enjoy the game more. But any winning is purely coincidental: the machine doesn’t know you have your lucky charm.

MYTH

A near miss on the pokies (when it seems I almost won) means a big win is close.

FACT

A player is never due for a win (or a loss). In most cases the past results tell us nothing about what will occur next.

MYTH

I have to win it back eventually.

FACT

You probably have heard the term: “the house always wins”. All gambling games favour the house over time. Persistence only pays off for the house!
